French author and publisher Dominique François will vividly describe how, for the Normans, the battle of Normandy started in June 1940. The German Army invaded and began four years of occupation, fortification, restrictions and humiliations while the Normans resisted. The countryside was devastated and eventually over 20,000 were killed in battles during June and July 1944.

That critical Belgian town, essential to the German Ardennes offensive, was successfully defended over five critical days by American troops who sacrificed themselves to buy time for reinforcements to arrive.
