Finally, he relays the story of creatively disobeying some orders - and following others, to return to Halsey's staff and planning and liberating POW's being held in Japan before the peace treaty was signed. Walter Halloran had a unique role, serving in the US Army's Signal Corps. He saw WWII like only a few ever had. He was on Normandy Beach during the first wave. He was at the Battle of the Bulge, Remagen and pretty much wherever the action was. It wasn't until well into the war, when it was realized that combat photographers spent more time on the lines than many of the infantryman.

The Raid on Hammelburg: Patton's Gamble to Rescue POW's (9-3)

In March of 1945, the Allies were pressing on both sides of Germany, Gen. Patton uncharacteristically decides to launch a raid with the goal of liberating a POW camp near Hammelburg. Oflag XIII - was thought to house 200-300 American Officers, which was 60 miles behind enemy lines. Major Abe Baum was ordered to command of this task force. With insufficient sustaining force, Baum led the raid, which ultimately failed, but still had measured positive effect in the overall war. Major Baum tells the story in his own words, along with Milt Koshiel (a half-track driver on the raid), and Don Frederick (one of the liberated POW's). This raid remains a controversial event in Patton's career.
